Considerations When Contracting Energy Safety Canada Certified External Auditors

  1. Please note that the information on this profile is provided and updated by the auditor and is not controlled by Energy Safety Canada.
  2. The Safety Audits and Certifications Outline of Roles and Responsibilities (ORR) sets out the framework for participation in Energy Safety Canada’s Certificate of Recognition (COR), Small Employer Certificate of Recognition (SECOR), and Injury Management/Return to Work (IM/RTW) certification programs. The purpose of ORR is to inform employers about their role, to provide answers to frequently asked questions, and to set out a high-level summary of each stakeholder's responsibilities. Please read and become familiar with ORR prior to hiring an auditor.
  3. Energy Safety Canada recommends that the employer obtain at least 2-3 professional references when considering hiring an auditor. Reference checks should include copies of recent auditing work completed for previous clients.
  4. Energy Safety Canada Certified External Auditors meet the following requirements:
    • Hold a certificate, diploma, or degree in Occupational Health and Safety or a Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) or equivalent.
    • Minimum of five years experience as a safety professional in the last ten years

The employer is encouraged to further review potential auditor’s qualifications to determine if the auditor has the necessary skill/background to complete the work required. Please consider specialized experience (i.e., work on drilling rigs) and training when hiring an auditor.
